Health Economic Evaluation of Hospital Service Reconfiguration

Client: South West Birmingham Hospitals Trust
Lead contractor: Health Services Management Centre, Birmingham University

The Trust wished to understand the overall impact of a strategic reallocation of General Surgery and Trauma and Orthopaedic services among the hospital group. We provided a before and after analysis of hospital admissions relating to these specialities. This analysis covered type of admission, HRG code, location of admission (transfer and post code), time of admission, length of stay and occupied bed days.

We were able to provide the Trust with a clear concise picture of how the workflow patterns had changed at each hospital and a number of KPIs that measured the success of the strategic reallocation.
