Review of Nurse Staffing Levels & Productivity

Client: St Helier Hospital
Lead contractor: Crystal Blue Consulting

Description
The review of nurse staffing levels had two aims: (i) benchmark the current nurse establishments in relation to other acute hospital services; (ii) plan future staffing levels. We combined top down benchmarks with detailed bottom-up planning at ward level. The inpatient services included: care of the elderly, surgery, medicine, paediatrics, critical care. In addition we reviewed outpatients, accident and emergency, midwifery and renal provision.

Services provided
Quantitative data specification and collection, benchmarking and analysis; qualitative data collection through interviews, workshops; analysis of policy context and guidelines.

Highlights
We linked staffing levels to workload, and especially to ward size. We were able to show the impact of hospital design upon demand for nurses.
